 SURNAME:

The Fournier family name has its origin in Normandy - Northen France - from the generation and noble lineage of Fourniers, lords of Vargimont Mericourt and Bernaville. At the XVIII century they passed to Terceira Island - Azores - in the person of Fournier Hugues Leclair of Choisi, who served in the French Navy since 1783; which was the son of Antoine Fournier of Choisi, a medical doctor, and his wife Catherine de Marliac.

Currently Fournier inhabit different parts of the world. The purpose of this particular page is to build a family tree of the descendants of Fournier in Portugal and Madeira Island.

O sobrenome Fournier é originário da Normandia - Norte de França -, da nobre geração e linhagem  dos Fourniers, senhores de Vargimont de Mericourt e Bernaville. Passaram no séc. XVIII para a Ilha Terceira - Açores -, na pessoa de Hugues Fournier Leclair de Choisi, que serviu na marinha francesa desde 1783; o qual era filho de Antoine Fournier de Choisi, doutor em Medicina, e de sua mulher Catherine de Marliac.

Actualmente os Fournier habitam diferentes partes do mundo. O objectivo desta página em particular é construir uma árvore genealógica dos descendentes dos Fournier em Portugal e na Ilha da Madeira.

COAT OF ARMS:

The coat of arms representing the insignia of the family is usually placed on a stand-shaped shield. At the time, family crests were not supplied at random. These had their origin in acts of courage and bravery normally made by great knights. The fields of study of coats of arms  is called Heraldry, and although it is unclear exactly when did this practice began, it is known that constituted a way to honour the noble families. With the passage of time were seen as status icon, a distinctive emblem that could be transmitted to their descendants.

BRASÃO:

O brasão de armas que representa a insígnia da família é geralmente colocado num suporte em forma de escudo. Nessa época, os brasões de família não eram fornecidos ao acaso. Estes tiveram a sua origem em actos de coragem e bravura normalmente efectuados por grandes cavaleiros. O campo de estudo dos brasões denomina-se Heráldica, e embora não se saiba exactamente desde quando é que esta prática teve início, sabe-se que constituíam uma forma de homenagear as famílias nobres. Com o passar do tempo eram vistos como ícone de status, um emblema distintivo que poderia ser transmitido aos seus descendentes.

MYSTERIOUS ORIGIN:

In fact, the name Fournier appears for the first time in the "General Armoury of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales" written by Sir Bernard Burke, published for the first time in the year 1842. This book contains about 60.000 noble names as Fournier and is the most comprehensive Collection of Coats of Arms, including the Bearings of Noblemen and Gentlemen of the British Empire, and diverse coat of arms that were seen in churches, familiar mansions, tombs, etc. This book is very valued by those who wish to investigate on its ancestors and want to conserve their memory. As the name Fournier was preserved and known throughout history for its actions and the representation of its symbols. Thus, the surname Fournier, its territorial origin and relationship with their ancestors, is in fact related with the English, Scottish, Irish, Gauls ... or based on any of these places.

For the year 870 AD, at the end of the Roman Empire of Charles Magno, it was the northen people ( Vikings ) that ravaged the coast of the British Isles, also winning a region of France  to which was given the name of Normandy.


ORIGEM MISTERIOSA: 

Na verdade, o nome da família Fournier aparece pela primeira vez na Inglaterra, Escócia, País de Gales e Irlanda, referenciado no livro " O Arsenal Geral da Inglaterra, Escócia, Irlanda e País de Gales", de Sir Bernard Burke, publicado pela primeira vez no ano de 1842. Nesta obra estão descritos cerca de 60.000 nomes de brasão, incluindo a história e heráldica do sobrenome Fournier, incluindo também o brasão de armas dos nobres e senhores do Império Britânico, e outros diversos escudos que foram vistos em igrejas, casas de família, túmulos, etc. Este livro é muito apreciado por aqueles que procuram pesquisar acerca dos seus antepassados e que querem preservar a memória destes. Como o nome Fournier foi preservado e conhecido através da história das suas acções e pela representação dos seus símbolos. Assim o apelido de Fournier, na sua origem territorial e relação com os seus antepassados, está de facto relacionado com o inglês, escocês, irlandeses, gauleses ... ou com base em qualquer um destes lugares.

Pois no ano de 870 d.C., no final do império romano de Carlos Magno, foram os nórdicos ( Vikings ) que assolaram as costas das Ilhas Britânicas conquistando também uma região de França à qual se deu o nome de Normandia.

Penélope Fournier was born in Portugal at the city of Funchal, Madeira island. She served in the Navy as a Portuguese sailor - radar operator -and subsequently enrolled in the course of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Science at Lisbon University (unfinished degree). In 2010 she applied to the Open University: bachelor degree in Information Science - Libraries, Archives, Documentation, Arts and Heritage; attending during the third year an Erasmus exchange programme at Utrecht University (Netherlands). Among her hobbies and personal interests there is to highlight Art (oil painting) and creative Writing (scientific novels). More information available on the following websites:

Penélope Fournier nasceu em Portugal e é natural do Funchal, ilha da Madeira. Serviu na Marinha de Guerra portuguesa como marinheira radarista e posteriormente ingressou no curso de Física Teórica da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (licenciatura não concluída). Em 2010 candidatou-se à Universidade Aberta: licenciatura em Ciências da Informação - Bibliotecas, Arquivos, Documentação, Artes e Património; frequentando no terceiro ano um intercâmbio Erasmus na Universidade de Utrecht (Holanda).
